6/1 - I'm a Mess

Haven't fully recovered from the Hawaii trip as I have been sleeping mostly since getting home.  I get sleepy driving short distances and anytime i sit or lay down.   I have been running a low grade fever that contributes to my fatigue.

Had a consult decision session with a Dr. OO at MD Anderson on Tuesday.  Dr. Kaseb had asked for a recommendation on the Lovenox blood thinner as to whether to discontinue it or not. I argued that the two clotting events I have had,, one 37 years ago and the one from last year were cause and effect and that I did not have a systemic problem with bleeding.  Dr. OO agreed and supported a decision to DC the Lovenox.

During the latter part of our trip I started developing pain in my new left hernia.   This was extremely troublesome because I would suppress my coughing to protect my sternum only to transfer the pressure and pain to the hernia.  So today we sought the services of a surgeon who would perform a hernia repair.   Dr. Lee my primary family physician found a Dr. Story who would do the surgery on Wednesday of next week.  So in the interim I purchased a retainer belt that does a good job of holding things together and avoiding the pain.

Dr.Lee warned that there is additional risk to the surgery with my liver in the current weakened condition.  I believe I have to accept the risk or the hernia will eventually become a life death situation.

We see Dr. Kaseb tomorrow at 8 AM and will get his concurrence.

  1. I'm not surprised that you haven't recovered yet, Ray. My little brother took nearly two weeks to get back to normal, when he was in high school. Of course, he had gone to Japan, and came back to Michigan via Hawaii. But still, the time changes and the stress (even if it was good stress) of the trip would wear down a person who wasn't ill, so give yourself time, ok?

We will continue to pray for you, and specifically for successful treatment of the hernia.

    Sue.

Hope you can get your hernia fixed soon.
