7-13 Monday
Fast forward to the hospital stay summary. Concerns with my liver led to an ultrasound, and a MRI. I present three lesions 4.0 cm 4.2 cm and 2.4 cm in size affecting both lobes of the liver, evidence of cirrhosis, and elevated alphafetoprotein (AFP). Conclusion, most likely cause is liver cancer. A biopsy would confirm but that could infect surrounding tissue and the evidence is already compelling enough. Correction, only a liver transplant offers any real prospect of extended normal life. Life expectancy predictions for my diagnosis are all over the map on the web, from a few months to two years. At this point with only one data point which doesn’t a trend set, we cannot know how aggressive the cancer is. This will become clearer over time. Dr. Raj referred me to Dr. Goss, a renowned liver transplant surgeon at the Houston Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) Liver Center, for evaluation for a transplant. I was discharged from the hospital standing and feeling strong.
